Over the course of around a month our class has pursued in making our largest project yet, a news package. What my package followed was the incoming Macbook Airs for students next year. At first when we started this project I felt quite overwhelmed but now that it is all together I feel happy with my final product. While I acknowledge it is not perfect, I felt as if it certainly got its message across. Over the span of this class I have realized that my skills in Final Cut Pro have increased significantly. Overall, this project allowed me to express my voice both verbally and visually.

The thing that I liked most about this class was the freedom given to us, we were allowed to express our ideas with our projects and it felt as if there were very little restrictions. However, I commonly got caught up in holding all the practices for filming leading to some confusion at times. My favorite project was probably this one, the news package. This is because the time provided to us giving me the ability to perfect my piece. In retrospect I wish I had redone my six word story project because the message I attempted to get across was strong just not conveyed in the correct manner. Next year, given I am a senior, I do not see myself taking Broadcast Tech 2 because of the schedule already in place. Thank you for a great semester Mr. Goble
Our class was assigned to watch six videos that were connected by the interviewer, Steve Hartman. What I found very interesting was his ability to find stories out of normal people that were legitimately intriguing. My favorite was a narrative that followed a family in a story called "Adoption". This clip was about two children who were taken in by a couple and eventually become adopted. The part that seemed to amaze me was the videos ability to capture so much emotion in a four minute video because of his ability to connect to me as a viewer with the concept of family. Another video I really enjoyed was the clip "Veteran" because of the specific use of sound bites as punctuation
I learned alot over the course of this assignment including how to conduct an interview. I interviewed Mason Player on his abilities in track. I thought that the most difficult part of this project was finding a good place to film with background sound. Where we filmed there seemed to be alot of traffic in the background so multiple takes needed to be conducted. I believe these tactics will help me with conducting interviews in the future and certainly hope to make more.
Today in class, we were instructed to watch a series of videos that aid us in interviewing others. Through these videos we learned many techniques. One of the most notable techniques was the rule of thirds. Using this method the person speaking is providing speaking space and nose space. Also, you are never to have the person being interviewed make eye contact with the camera to make it appear as if the cameraman were eavesdropping on the conversation. I felt that the most informative video was one conducted by PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs.
Over the course of two weeks we were instructed to create a story surrounded by six words. My 6 words were "I'm on the pursuit of happiness". These words came from the song "Pursuit of Happinness" by kid cudi, which is one of my favorite songs. I thought these words were a good resemblance of a life goal. I really enjoyed making this project.
After learning about several shots including some such as canted, Birds-eye view, and eye level, our class was told to take pictures of things around the school or at home through different shots. At my house I decided to practice by taking pictures of a mask collection. I chose, in order, shots named: Extreme Wide, Wide, Medium, Low, Tight, and Extreme Tight. The reason I chose these shots is because these give the viewer a better understanding of the setting and the subject itself. With these images you can see things such as the other masks hung on the wall and the actual material or gloss of the mask. I enjoyed this exercise and genuinely think it expanded my knowledge on different shots.
After the introduction to Six word stories through Earnest Hemingway's "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn" our class was opened up to a world of projects. On the internet I found several websites that were full of short stories including this one: www.sixwordstories.net/. One of my favorites was "Wrong number, said a familiar voice" or "male, its an old drivers license". Something that I found very interesting about these stories is that there was so much depth in so little words. It is amazing that something so minor could bring a person to tears. I am looking forward to making one of my own.
Over the course of the past week, I have taken videos with a duration around 10 seconds each. With each of these shots I compressed them all into one compilation. These shots consisted of a wide shot, an angle shot, a low shot, a linking shot, a depth shot, and an opposite shot (WALLDO). The shots that I took were of a student in ceramics making pottery. I very much enjoyed this project because once again we were granted the freedom to take our shots where we wanted, and what we wanted.
For the past week or two we have worked on an assignment to collect video clips to practice shooting skills. We went around the school filming things like signs, vending machines, and many more. After all these shots were taken and approved by our instructor Mr. Goble, we compiled all shots into one video on Final Cut Pro X. On this software we learned a lot of basic skills including importing clips, adding transitions, adding titles, and changing audio levels. While the final video may have been a mess, it was fun to create. Overall, my favorite part of this assignment was to go out and take the shots, I enjoyed the free learning experience.
